1/18/2024 0 Comments Swayback horse sketchIf the horse is only displaying signs of a sway from lack of correct muscle development, then using the saddle bridging shims will allow the horse to move more comfortably and correctly so that those muscles can be developed and the shims may eventually be removed. How do you saddle a horse with a sway back? As in humans, it may be influenced by bearing young it is sometimes seen in a broodmare that has had multiple foals. ![]() Swayback is caused in part from a loss of muscle tone in both the back and abdominal muscles, plus a weakening and stretching of the ligaments. Because the horse has to rock on to their back end and push off the ground to jump, it’s particularly beneficial for strengthening the hindquarters. If your horse jumps, bounces are a great way to build muscle without putting too much strain on their joints. This will help your horse use his or her full range of motion by stretching and relaxing the body. Move the treat around the horse’s body(i.e.toward a shoulder, elbow, or hip). Simply hold a treat (such as a carrot) close enough to the horse’s mouth where he or she will stretch to reach it. These exercises include: Proper lunging to encourage a horse to use their back and abdominal muscles to carry themselves. While there is no cure for swayback in horses, there are certain exercises that can be done to help strengthen the back and keep their ligaments comfortable.
